Sparrow. by Rodrigo-Vega Sparrow. by Rodrigo-Vega
Something I always do is visualize song lyrics in my head as drawings or animations... Unfortunately my animation skills are brutally limited as it is my attention span to make a comic of any significant lenght.
So when I saw the opportunity to approach this idea I took it, after repeatedly hearing this short, yet beautiful and touching song.
The messege is simple: If we look deep enough within ourselves and what we could really do for others that need your us, you'll see you we are as much an asshole as the Oak Tree.

Also it was a nice opportunity to practice drawing things of subtle beauty instead of the badass and the awesome and the cute that are so overdone lately.
Also all my comics (the ones I post in Spanish in facebook for my friends) are comedy.

The suggester said, "Sparrow. by ~IRIRIV is a beautiful piece, well drawn and executed. The emotions conveyed in the drawings match the lyrics perfectly. It's gorgeous and look at the pretty birds." It's true that the comic is filled with diverse emotions plus the art style that the artist chose gave an intense match that suits the theme and the story very well. Sparrows need love too! :( Many people hate them and want to chase them from bird feeders and birdhouses, like they were pests. :(
Rodrigo-Vega Featured By Owner Apr 8, 2013  Professional General Artist
Really? what kind of ass puts up a birdhouse and then chases away the bloody birds?
JemDragon Featured By Owner Apr 9, 2013  Student General Artist
Depending on where you are, some sparrow species are an invasive species and push out/compete native birds. For example, European House Sparrows have been found to cause the decline in native blue birds in the USA. They have actually been known to go into blue bird nests and destroy bluebird eggs and nestlings because they want competition. They will even attack the adult blue birds and kill them. So yeah, they might look like a cute bird but they are highly territorial and aggressive to any other birds.
Rodrigo-Vega Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2013  Professional General Artist
Weird, I've seen them fight in little skirmishes with each other, but never attacking other species.
JemDragon Featured By Owner Apr 17, 2013  Student General Artist
It really depends on whether they are an invasive species or a native species to the area. In places where the sparrows are native species, then other local birds who are also native species will be able to compete with them and defend themselves because they would have evolved alone side each other.

Why should I accept a message that's so overtly harsh?

No one really needs you unless they ask for it, helping someone isn't one-sided, there also needs to be the willingness to be helped. Why should you blame yourself for not being able to help everyone, you can't know or see everything. How are you even supposed to help someone if you can't help yourself? Don't tell me what we should or could be, we are what we are, we can't change our essential nature. Oh you may not fear death, but I do, because death brings you nothing but life brings you something. So if things are complicated and it's too difficult to help, why denounce yourself as "evil" or something when circumstances can't help themselves.

No, I've hated myself before, NEVER AGAIN!!
Rodrigo-Vega Featured By Owner Mar 18, 2013  Professional General Artist
Hehe, brother, I think you overthought my jockingly moral interpretation for this poem :)
Again my intention isn't at all to give anyone a sermon here, but I might aswel try to answer you questions;
-It -is- nice to offer help even to those not asking. I know this by personal experience. They are often the ones who need it the most. Many people just like to whine and don't really need your help, many others try really hard and don't mean to annoy anyone who doesnt seem to be actively trying to help. Which should we be helping? If one is a parent for example, one really should take active interest in his spawn to find out how they are feeling.
-Blame yourself for not being able? Oh, you absolutely should't. But it doesn't really hurt to try and make sure you can't.
-One can sometimes help others in some things, even while unable help onseself with some -other- things. You never know how helping others could help yourself, maybe seeing things from the outside could give you a certain insight on your own problems.
-Only your own experience and judgement will tell you what you -should- be; but I can certainly tell you what you -could be-. And you could be many things; and the truth is that nature, as you put it, is anything but permanent and transformation is not only possible but also something to be expected. You -can- change your essential nature.
-Death brings nothing? nothing brings nothing, something can never become nothing the basic laws of the universe will not allow it.
-If it is the circumstances that make it too hard to help then definitively you are not acting wrong. The question is -are they really that difficult-? Is that difficult for the oak to lend some space? for the swan to say a kind word? for the wheet to lend some food? is it too difficult for us to do those same things?
-Hating oneself for failing to do these things is anything but useful. If one really couldn't then there is nothing to blame, if one can and doesn't then it is always possible to try harder. Helping should not be a load, it's a liberation. Self-hatred is an unnesary load that holds us from liberation and consequently from being able to help others.

Who the fuck are you to talk?!

You're just another rejector who throws around the word "emo" just because you think you're the "strong one". Do you really think that helps? No, it only makes me feel more sick than I already do, because I've had enough of having people like you inflict their narrow-boxed imagination onto me.

It's people like you who make life painful, so fuck off!!
Rodrigo-Vega Featured By Owner Apr 27, 2013  Professional General Artist
Ufff.. You are taking it way too hard man; I meant no offense to anyone at all. Sorry if I offended you in any way.
I often call myself an "emo" if you check my works and descriptions, so I wouldn't think of myself as "the strong one" knowing I can be quite the crybaby.
Emotion is a great thing, nothing wrong with it...
But I really fail to read your message for me here, I'm pretty baffled.
You are just telling me to fuck off because I illustrated a poem about apathy?
Somnium-23 Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2013
I know this is very late, but, I'm sorry.

I didn't appreciate your poem well enough, I got way too arrogant, and I apologize. I was just frustrated with your use of the word "emo" as I do find it offensive, mostly because a lot of people use it as a way to belittle and humiliate people who are depressed, stressed, angry, confused, despairing or just showing any negative emotion in general, as if emotions were taboo or something and we should just reject them rather than process them. But I guess you use it as a way to make fun of yourself.

Anyway, let's put this bad blood behind us, shall we?
Rodrigo-Vega Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2013  Professional General Artist
But of course, it seems you are very kind after all :)
No hard feelings.
I absolutely agree with your view of the taboo on strong negative emotions, I know it first hand as I work with it on a weekly basis.
My point being that it might be better to vent these things out to break the silence.
I believe that a big part of the humiliation (or what-you-call-it) directed towards a person with some kind of serious emotional outburst comes from the person suffering towards itself based on the expected reaction of others, the second part from actual external reactions from people that just don't really have a clue of what that person is going through (neither they could as long as there isn't any form of communication between the parts) and have therefore no knowledge of how to react properly, and just a third smallest part corresponding to actual willing ignorance or malice.
I'm glad you came back to clear this up, it was far from my intent for anyone to take anything bad at heart from this.

The sparrow should have asked me Q-Q
It's so sad because it feels so real...
The drawings are beautiful, they match the song perfect.
And every time I listen to this song I look at this and almost cry...

Beautiful. Sad and melancolic. I like the sketchiness of this all and how you color out of the panels.
So the message of this whole thing to you is that people are all in fact asses?
